July & August

All supers containing honey in excess of that required for wintering should be taken off by the end of the August. When removing supers of honey, if the honey flow is over or has temporarily ceased, remove supers of honey in early morning or near sunset to prevent robbing from starting. Near the end of the month of August reduce hive entrances to prevent robbing using a screen with a small opening so the bees can protect the hive from robbing. Colonies may be requeened with young laying queens following the removal of honey. Requeening should be accompanied with feeding of sugar syrup. Do not spill syrup as this may initiate robbing.
